Frequently Asked Questions – Donkey Kong Country GBC (Ask Cranky)

The following feature was originally found on the official Donkey Kong Country GBC promotional website where the wizened Cranky Kong answered popular fan questions. It has been been presented here for posterity.

Q: How many extra lives can I get?

A: What is it with you whippersnappers and free lives? The game stops displaying how many lives you have after you get 99, but it still keeps track as long as you keep rackin’ ’em up. The maximum number of extra lives is 354. For example, you could have 120 lives but the game will still just say that you have 99. Man, and to think that I busted my hide trying to beat my games with only one life! Those were the days …

Q: How many endings are there?

A: Two. If you don’t find everything then I’ll be there to point out your shortcomings. If you find everything, then I’ll be there to congratulate you. I doubt that that will happen anytime soon.

Q: How do I get 101%?

A: Now we’re talking. It’s good to see the youth of today trying to give it their all. To get 101% you’ll need to find and enter every last bonus area and every regular area as well. You also need to beat K. Rool, find every last sticker and finish the game in each of the three play modes. Back in my day, I’d probably find a way to get 102%, but 101% is pretty good for this generation. If you see an exclamation point after the name of a level, that means that you’ve found everything. If not, then you have more work to do!

Q: How do I go back to worlds that I’ve already finished?

A: That’s typical. Instead of exploring uncharted territory you want to loaf around in levels you’ve already completed. If you really want to, visit Funky’s Flights and use his plane to fly back.

Q: There are a lot of bonus items that seem to be just out of reach. How do I get them?

A: Go to the gym and build up your muscles! If you’re too lazy for that, try a mid-air roll jump. Here’s how I used to do it: Do the roll attack (press the B Button) off a ledge, then press the A Button to jump while you’re still rolling in mid-air.

Q: I’m stuck! What should I do?

A: Quit your whining and download the free DKC Player’s Guide from the pros at Nintendo Power Magazine. Now get going! Get! It’s time for my nap.
