Welcome to the Scribes! If you’re new to this sort of thing, Scribes served as a letters page featured on the official Rare site from 1998 – 2012, and began as their primary means of answering fan questions that had been sent in.
Scribes was hardly grounds for dry, straight-answers though, as the writer and designer of the website, Leigh Loveday, took to answering each question with suitable measures of wit, sarcasm, or riotous surrealism, depending on the inquiry.
Some questions even warranted further explanation from game designers, musicians, artists and programmers, giving readers a direct source for information behind their favorite titles – so Scribes was equal parts informative as it was entertaining.

We’ve done our best to provide a chronological listing of the Scribes below, however the images and fan submissions (known as ‘Rubbish Picture Attachments” or, RPAs) that were previously available in some messages were regrettably lost to the ravages of time, leaving us to preserve only the text exchanges.
As an added bonus however, we’ve used the Scribes to aid our Archives section: if you’re a fan of Perfect Dark for instance, and combing through nearly 15 years of Scribes for information on that title seems a tad daunting, you’ll find that visiting the Perfect Dark section via Rareware Archives will reveal a master list containing an excerpt of all Perfect Dark discussion for your convenience. You’ll find a ‘Scribes’ icon alongside the usual indicators for ‘Images’ ‘Top 5’s’ and ‘Videos’ underneath any applicable game entry in the Archives section proper.
