Nintendo answers some common queries on Donkey Kong Country with their Frequently Asked Questions feature.

What does the “:” mean on the file select menu?

That’s how much time you’ve been playing the game (ie. “2:36” mean you’ve been playing for two hours and thirty-six minutes).

Where’s a good spot to get lots of 1-UPs?

Jungle Hijinx is a great spot to build up extra lives…
1. First, finish the level. Then re-enter the level and work your way back to the Continue Barrel to save your progress there (so that whenever you re-enter the level you’ll start at the continue barrel instead of the beginning).

2. Next, go to the right and collect the Golden Expresso Animal Token.

3. Press Start and then Select to exit the level.

4. Re-enter the level and get the Animal Token again.

5. Repeat this until you get three animal tokens and you’ll go to the Expresso Bonus Level. In the bonus level you’ll be able to pick up at least 5 or 6 extra lives every time!

How many levels are there?

There are 40 levels (33 regular and 7 boss) and 68 hidden levels/areas. Which makes a total of 108.

How many extra lives can I get?

The games stops displaying how many lives you have after you get 99, but it still keeps track for as long as you get them (i.e. you could have 120 lives but the game will still just say that you have 99).

How many endings are there?

Two. The only difference is when Cranky Kong is talking to you, if you found everything he’ll congratulate you; if you didn’t find everything, he’ll tell you that you missed some things.

How do I get 101%?

You need to find/enter every bonus area and every regular area. You also need to defeat King K. Rool. You do not need to collect certain items.

Note:
If there is an Exclamation Point after the name of every level in the game while you are standing on the level, right before you enter it. If there is not, then you have missed something in the level.

How do I Erase (clear, reset, delete) a file?

On the file select screen you should see the option “Erase Data” at the bottom of the screen. Simply push down on the control pad until “Erase Data” is highlighted, then press the A button. Then highlight the file you wish to Erase and press A again.

How do I go back to worlds that I’ve already finished?

If you want to go back to any of the worlds that you’ve already finished, you’ll need to find Funky’s Flights and use his plane to fly back.

To find Funky’s Flights, you’ll need to complete several levels first.

How do I get items that are out in mid-air?

Do the “Roll Attack” ( press Y) off a ledge, then press B to jump (while still in the roll motion) in mid-air.
