Top 5 Best Rare Crossover Easter Eggs (Easter Special 2013)

In a time honored tradition that stretches back to our very first Top 5 list, Easter is more to us than spending time with family and hunting for chocolate eggs; it’s neglecting the ones we love and searching for digital easter eggs instead. With a legacy of nearly thirty years behind them, Rare has made ‘quite a number of games’, so we’re told, and reflecting upon their roots in their modern Xbox 360 lineup reveals some of the most exclusive Easter Eggs to date.
Whether its a mention, reference or quick nod to their past work or present offerings, we’ve tracked down the most impressive of the lot for your reading pleasure. These are the Top 5 Best Rare Crossover Easter Eggs!

#5. A HEFTY BACKL.O.G. OF XBOX 360 HOPEFULS – BANJO-KAZOOIE: NUTS & BOLTS (XBOX 360)

As the omnipotent creator of all things bleeping and blooping, one would expect L.O.G. or the Lord of Games to wear his credentials on his sleeve – even if that does involve apologizing for Grabbed by the Ghoulies. If you’re especially curious, you can always pay L.O.G. a visit in Showdown Town where he’ll discuss his latest works if provoked, which include Xbox 360 sequels for Killer Instinct, Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini and even Grabbed by the Ghoulies! Unfortunately these 360 hopefuls will have to remain just that, as L.O.G. confesses to overreaching himself with the mention of Ghoulies II, ruining his humorous jape and crushing our dreams in the process. Still, the mere mention of these titles in a single quip is enough to make any avid Easter Egg hunter and Rare fan giddy with excitement.

#4. ACCESSORIZE WITH SOME RATHER SPIFFING RARE WEAR – VIVA PIÑATA (XBOX 360)

Paying a visit to the ever-enthusiastic Miss Petula during your garden escapades will provide you with several accessories to add a little zest to your resident Piñatas. If you’re especially observant you might notice some reoccurring articles, including a “Breegull Carrier” backpack and “Shark Tooth Necklace” pioneered by Banjo, “Orhto’s Spare Hat” once worn by the Wotnot wizard from Kameo: Elements of Power and even a “Thunder Cut” Mohawk, which seems to take its inspiration from Chief Thunder of Killer Instinct fame. If you’d rather buy your Rare wear wholesale, the DLC Packs will stock Petula with the likes of Jet Force Gemini helmet heads, Mr. Pants Bowler caps and a few items belonging to the house staff of Grabbed by the Ghoulies – including Baron Von Ghoul‘s greasy moustache, euch!

#3. THEY CAME FROM TWYCROSS CRATER – JETPAC REFUELLED (XBOX LIVE ARCADE)

While Jetpac Refuelled pays tribute to Rare‘s Ultimate: Play the Game lineage in Retro mode, the updated Arcade rendition guides Jetman around the cosmos where he’s sure to come across several familiar sounding galaxies and star formations. Level 41: JO3 Dark Crater for instance, can be interpreted as Joe Dark, or Joanna Dark, the lead protagonist in shooter fare Perfect Dark. Fortunately the other titles are a bit more obvious, such as Level 47‘s Solar Jetman Returns, which references the return of Jetman since his NES exploits, and the Red Squirrel Nebula and Kameopardalis Beta referencing Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Kameo: Elements of Power respectively. With 128 inimical alien worlds to explore, there’s more than enough incentive to blast into the foray and discover strange new worlds.

#2. KAMEO’S REAL TRANSFORMING PROWESS – KAMEO: ELEMENTS OF POWER (XBOX 360)

Released alongside Kameo‘s first adventure on Xbox 360, the Masquerade Pack DLC sought to broaden her transformation abilities beyond the Elements of Power with 10 new costumes. While each costume is a bold change from the last, three in particular referenced Rare‘s most iconic heroines, allowing Kameo to slip in and out of their designs like a chameleon. Selecting Masquerade #1 would allow her to take on the likeness of Vela from Jet Force Gemini, with brilliant blue hair and futuristic space armor. Masquerade #2 gave her looks to die for when she emulated Killer Instinct‘s Orchid in green, and Masquerade #3 had her swapping looks with Joanna Dark, touting her sleek new design from Perfect Dark Zero, which was released in tandem for the 360 alongside Kameo‘s epic quest.

#1. WITH ENEMIES LIKE THESE, WHO NEEDS FRIENDS? – PERFECT DARK ZERO (XBOX 360)

While the names assigned to the computer players in the Combat Simulator might seem trivial to outsiders, Rare fans will instantly recognize the names as characters or game titles that stretch back to their Ultimate: Play the Game days. After cycling through the randomized BOT characters for an hour, over 100 individual character and title names appeared, the entirety of which can be seen here. After managing to list off every Ultimate game by name, Perfect Dark Zero tackles the NES, SNES, N64 and Xbox library with entries for Marble Madness, Sneaky Snakes, Banjo-Kazooie, Monster Max, Killer Instinct, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Battletoads, Jeopardy, GoldenEye 007, R.C. Pro-AM, Diddy Kong Racing, It`s Mr. Pants and much more! Is it any wonder that Jo won the Easter hunt this year?
