Top 5 Super Secret Rare Cheat Codes (That Aren’t So Secret Anymore…)

Cheaters never prosper they say, and perhaps they were right when it came to amassing a library of cheat codes before the advent of the Internet. In the schoolyard you’d have to rely on your fellow chums or games magazines to bring about the good stuff, and even then it was entirely possible that they were absolutely full of it. The more bizarre the cheat code, and more elaborate the method of unlocking it, the more likely it was to have you wasting your time mashing buttons in vain. But amidst all of the rumors, bathroom gossip and interrogated Magic 8-Balls, there are a few genuine Rare cheat codes that have caught our eye; they may sound far-fetched in theory, and in practice demand dedication – but the payoff is worth it for these diamonds in the rough.
These are the Top 5 Super Secret Rare Cheat Codes (That Aren’t So Secret Anymore…)

#5. UNLOCK EYEDOL AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER – KILLER INSTINCT ARCADE (ARCADE)

Even when Killer Instinct was siphoning quarters like a laundromat during its Arcade days, the subject of unlockable hidden characters had been established long before. With methods ranging anywhere from a secret button combination to ridiculous demands of endurance rounds, it’s no surprise that this gem could be met with outright skepticism. If you’d like a chance at controlling UltraTech‘s prized fighter, just select Riptor from the character roster and then hold Left and press Quick Punch + Quick Kick. Once your opponent is selected, quickly hold Right and press Medium Punch + Fierce Punch + Fierce Kick. If you’ve done this correctly, the warlord will enter the match instead, after the Arcade cabinet whispers Eyedol’s name in a low rumble – which marks for us the exact moment we would have rolled our eyes in disbelief.

#4. GARDEN GNOME DE PLUME STOCKS PETULAS PAPER PETS – VIVA-PIÑATA (XBOX 360)

Despite its colorful exterior, Viva Piñata is more a challenge in multi-tasking and management than it is admiring your garden residents. Players have the option of creating multiple gardens to this effect, sharing profits between them and earning new Piñata residents in the process. Assigning each Garden a name proper is expected, but nowhere is it applied that your decision to incorporate 1337 Speak into your garden will ultimately pale in comparison to some choice cheat codes. Naming your garden as Chewnicorn, Bullseye, Gooba and Kittyfloss will acknowledge your accolades to Piñata knowledge and reward you with several bonus accessories in Petula’s Paper Pets that would otherwise remain hidden for the duration of the game. Piñata DLC is sweet, but unlockable treats hiding away in our copies are even sweeter…

#3. SKETCHY JAMES BOND IS STEPPING OUT OF LINE MODE – GOLDENEYE 007 (N64)

As an appropriate tribute to the worlds greatest spy, Goldeneye 007 was filled with secret codes that players could amass as they played through Bond‘s campaign. Avid Secret Agent’s would find themselves collecting 23 unlockable cheats as they completed objectives in record time, but their obsessive gaming compulsion would go into overdrive with an absent spot for a possible 24th cheat. While this code wouldn’t manifest itself in an official capacity, rumor has it that a secret cheat code called “Line Mode” could be activated during play. Sure enough, entering a lengthy push-button cheat code transformed the entire game into a virtual sketchbook; color and texture was strangely missing, and in its place every object was given a thin wireframe outline. It’s extremely difficult to play in this mode, but is incredibly fun as well.

#2. AN EGGCELLENT EASTER EGG IN NEW ORLEANS – MICKEY’S SPEEDWAY USA (N64)

While Mickey’s Speedway USA naturally features a cross country tour of the States, the mouse and company are free to waste a bit of time in “Practice” mode, which features an idyllic countryside complete with a chicken coop. At first glance there’s nothing but a few meandering hens to hold your interest, but if you spend a lengthy period of time running over their eggs as they croon in outrage you’ll find there’s method to your madness. Ultimately zipping about the barnyard and enjoying a bit of vehicular henslaughter will result in unlocking previously unmentioned course, New Orleans as a reward for your senseless violence. Without mention of this racetrack anywhere in the game, Rare left it up to players to swerve through “Practice Mode”, cracking upwards of 20 eggs without any incentive. That’s how you hide a cheat code!

#1. A PIDAN MYSTERY THAT WILL KEEP FANS GUESSING FOREVER – BANJO-KAZOOIE (N64)

Originally meant as a bonus for owning both Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel, Banjo-Tooie, the infamous Stop ‘N’ Swop feature would have shared a number of colorful Mystery Eggs to be collected throughout the game and traded over cartridges. While this scrapped extra wouldn’t see the light of day, fans who were enticed by the original appearance of the Pink and Blue Mystery Eggs during the conclusion dug deeply enough to unearth 4 new eggs that Rare never alluded to. Luckily each egg can be obtained from a lengthy cheat code to be used in Treasure Trove Cove, leading players around various levels to pick up their desired prizes. With nods to the cut content in Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Banjo-Pilot and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, it seems the discussion of Stop ‘N’ Swop will never falter with Rare or its fans.
