Top 5 Rare Games Hidden Inside Rare Games

If your primitive brain just tried exiting through your ears just now, don’t panic; this is a perfectly natural reaction to the matryoshka doll scenario we’ve just presented that can be found in many a Rare game. The soiled underpants aren’t however, so you might want to do something about that… In short, Rare has quite the knack with having old scenarios and characters surfacing in their new games, but what really makes us grin from ear to ear is when they manage to include an entire level from one of their old releases, fully playable in their current title. Having the original ZX Spectrum title Jetpac title showing up in the studded remake Jetpac Refuelled for example is amusing, but predictable – for the purposes of this list we’re looking for games that have no correlation with each other aside from the game they share. Whether they’re out in the open for you to gape at, or require hours upon hours to unlock, you’re sure to find some familiar ground on this list. These are the Top 5 Rare Games Hidden Inside Rare Games!

#5. ORDANANCE 007 – BANJO-TOOIE

If you’ve managed to play through Bond’s original campaign in Goldeneye 007, the Breegul Blaster ability in Banjo-Tooie should find you well with similar strafing controls and ammunition pick-ups. If you find things getting a little too familiar however, this could be due to the fact that Banjo-Tooie features a few modified maps that you’ll be required to blast through like Bond to clear the quarters. Specifically, the Ordanance Storage in GlitterGulch Mine and Clinker’s Cavern in Grunty Industries are based on the Archives and Aztec Complex respectively. Luckily you won’t be tasked with escorting Natalya through these Tooie renditions, but we can hardly see touting around the bantering Kazooie as an improvement…

#4. SIMIAN SPECTRUM – DONKEY KONG 64

With the aforementioned Jetpac Refuelled coming packed with the original Jetpac title, Ultimate aficionados were in for a treat – but if it was originality you were hoping for, the same feat was done nearly a decade previous by a bunch of monkeys. Wandering into Cranky’s Lab during the events of Donkey Kong 64 could result in a go on his old console provided you’ve collected enough Banana Medals, the title of course was Rare‘s very first title, Jetpac entirely faithful to its original release with one exception. Players were tasked with besting a high score for a chance to nab the illusive Rare Coin, which would in turn allow them to face off against King K. Rool later on in their adventure – the King still reins on many cartridges today for this very reason.

#3. FACILITY FANTASY – PERFECT DARK ZERO

Finding itself a spiritual successor to the highly praised Goldeneye 007, the intergalactic venture of epic proportions, Perfect Dark wasn’t above showing Bond how real espionage is done. Case in point, Joanna Dark was able to strut her stuff around Bond’s old stomping grounds with the second map pack released for Perfect Dark Zero on Xbox 360. Included in the free map pack was classic level Facility, given a fresh makeover with high resolution detail for play online with friends who fawned for the original 007 flavor. While an XBLA release wasn’t in the cards for those looking back to Bonds trend setting multiplayer, Rare’s femme fatale would at least manage to salvage one of the most memorable deathmatch arenas for us to curse at all over again. Thanks, Jo.

#2. JEFF & BARRY RARITY – JET FORCE GEMINI

With much of the same team from Diddy Kong Racing finding their calling in cosmic hit Jet Force Gemini, it seemed rather inevitable that some ties would be drawn between the two – though it would be anything but an easy task to find. If you’ve managed to blast your way into the Big Bug Fun Club on the fringes of the galaxy however, you’ll have found two arcade cabinets with Jeff & Barry’s Racing I and II loaded up and ready to go. If you can manage the impossible and clear the timed trials for these tedious tracks you’ll manage to unlock Greenwood Village as a multiplayer course. While the central well shortcut has been blocked up, and the level is lacking its familiar tune, the fan favorite is faithful in bringing the goods directly from Diddy Kong Racing.

#1. JAMES AND JOANNA – PERFECT DARK XBLA

After Perfect Dark Zero had managed to bring back the gaming world’s most reputable restroom with acclaimed reaction, it seemed that Rare wasn’t quite finished with rehashing Bond’s past, or Joanna’s for that matter. So too would the original Perfect Dark title for Nintendo 64 come to Xbox Live Arcade bringing with it the cleverly titled ‘Felicity’ map from Goldeneye 007 as well as the Aztec Complex and the Egyptian Temple. The care and consideration that went into customizing Perfect Dark‘s original multiplayer options were realized to new potential with the advent of Xbox Live which meant that the classic maps looked and played just like their original counterparts, with considerable polish. For England, James? No. For Xbox Live Arcade.
