Top 5 Rare Terrors of the Deep

If our Top 11 best Rare levels to play on Halloween list is anything to go by, Rare is no stranger to testing the waters of the absolutely terrifying. It’s in these same waters that they prey on a different sort of horror for the purposes of this list however; our natural instinct to fear the unknown. Despite the inherent dangers of having to dive into uncharted terrain, time and time again we’ll find ourselves submerged in the murky depths trying to liberate a massive mechanical shark ala Banjo-Kazooie, or venture inside of a presumed haunted ship that lay dormant on the seabed as seen in Donkey Kong 64. It’s here that Rare makes us leap out of our skin, with unfathomable creatures and sea monsters preying just out of distance, waiting to swim up and make themselves known. With only about 10% of our real world oceans explored it’s anyones guess to what lies just beneath the surface, and with Rare fueling our nightmares it’s likely that you’ll ward off having to venture out into ankle deep water for a lifetime. These are the Top 5 Rare Terrors of the Deep, a perfect list to read in the bath.

#5. GLIMMER’S GALLEON GAUNTLET – DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2: DIDDY’S KONG QUEST

While Diddy and Dixie Kong were tasked with exploring the sailing Kremling ships in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, leaving no stone unturned meant that the Kongs would also have to venture into the hull of several sunken ships where they would find quite a few nautical naughties beneath the surface. To make matters worse, levels like Glimmer’s Galleon left the prime apes in the dark, with only the lingering light of animal buddy Glimmer to light the way ahead and cast an eerie glow on the terrifying creatures found in the ships hull. The Lockjaw enemies were quite difficult to avoid, as a few chattering chomps in the darkness were all the warning you had before this freaky fish swam out ready to give you a nasty bite! Yikes!

#4. CHOMPASAURUS CHOWDOWN – BANJO-TOOIE

While Lord Woo Fak Fak of Banjo-Tooie does make a strong case for himself as an aforementioned terror of the deep, he just can’t step to the scare tactics employed by the Chompasaurus found in Terrydactyland. If you’ve let the game introduction linger on you’ll have a sneak peak at this colossal monstrosity as he emerges from the depths with a ominous boss theme to follow. Gargantuan maw dripping with saliva, the Chompasaurus leans in towards the bear and bird duo ignorantly perched on the pillar ahead of him. As you scream for Banjo to move, the Chompasaurus reels back his disturbingly long neck and in one bite swallows the duo whole! While the Chompasarus does make himself an ally segueing into a digestible mini-game, his first impression instills fear with us to this day.

#3. PETRIFIED BY PUFTOSS – DONKEY KONG 64

While Donkey Kong 64 warmed up to a generation of gamers suffering from hydrophobia by having the Kongs venture underwater without a pesky time limit, and kept the wildlife under the surface fairly tame for the most part, this was all just a clever ruse to let our guards down for Puftoss. Venturing into the Boss Door as Lanky would have the clownish orangutan manning a lonely dinghy during a thunderstorm. After a sinister growl from the darkness coaxes Lanky into switching on the lamp, your worst fears will be realized as an enormous puffer fish looms into view, towering over Lanky‘s pathetic dinghy as it lets out a roar. You’ll be tasked with cruising the circumference of Puftoss in the center of the lake and looping through timed DK Zippers, all while the storm rages on. Keep the light off next time, Lanky

#2. BITTEN BY THE BULLFISH – CONKER’S BAD FUR DAY

Set to guard the Catfish Vault in Conker’s Bad Fur Day, the Bullfish is rather intimidating at first, but after he’s had his leash shortened by Conker his bark is rendered worse than his bite. After you’ve emerged from within the Vault after your business is finished, the only way back to shore is to swim the length of the Bullfish river; a task made infinitely more terrifying as the brute tears away from his post and makes his way towards Conker! You’ll have to pass as many catfish as you swim on ahead to tempt the brute into ravenously tearing through the competition. The red squirrels’ feeble strokes do little to put him ahead of the approaching Bullfish however, and things come to a head as he finds himself running a length of dock while the Bullfish chews through it effortlessly! Forget Jaws, this is why we’re not swimming anytime soon!

#1. SNACKER THE INSATIABLE SHARK – BANJO-KAZOOIE

The inviting waters of Treasure Trove Cove made themselves into a quick beginners trap after gamers stepped onto its sun-kissed shores in Banjo-Kazooie. Venturing underneath the dock to rescue the Blue Jinjo that had found itself submerged under the surf would call forth Snacker, a sleuthing shark interested in taking a few bites out of the plunging duo. Unless you managed to spot Snacker close to the shore, you’d Feathery Flap in vein as you attempted to outswim the shark and make it back to the less hostile sands. Complete with his own telling theme with fast paced strings that screamed for you to escape the water, Snacker would act the food critic, comparing bear and bird buffet to cheese and crackers. Many a Blue Jinjo has gone on unaided for this reason alone. You’re on your own, buddy!
