Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts – LOG’s Lost Challenges Guide

Once you’ve booted up the game after downloading the LOG’s Lost Challenges downloadable content, head around to the back-side [sic] of Mumbo’s Motors to find a new door, leading right to LOG’s Lost Challenges in the Test O’ Track. Once inside, you’ll be able to talk to six characters to try your hand at their challenges. Beat the LOG’s Choice challenge, and you’ll be able to try the Player’s Choice portion.

Completing a LOG’s choice challenge to Jiggy standard will fill up a picture on the wall with a black and white jigsaw piece. Completing the Player’s choice challenge will colour the piece in. If you manage to colour in the entire picture, you’ll win some special concept art as well as being able to play Klungo’s new arcade game: Hero Klungo Sssavesss Teh Universsse. If you complete all challenges to T.T. Trophy standard, LOG will award you with something special back in town.

Challenge #1: LOG’s Choice – Mumbo: Big Rimmed Race Off
Strategy: As soon as the race starts, hop out of your vehicle and hit the B button to go into the editor. Take the ammo, Weldar’s breath weapons and perhaps the windscreens and flags and bunch them together before taking them off your vehicle and getting back into the race.

For the first turn, don’t try to overtake Bottles or you’ll likely spin out – take the long way around up the ramp before overtaking him on the next bend. When you get to the docks, you’ll want to try and overtake Wumba and Mumbo on the corners. You’ll need some speed so that you can effectively ‘hop’ over the corners of the wood without falling into the water. Once you’re past the docks though, get onto the concrete again and put your foot on the gas.

If you’re able to get ahead of the pack within the first lap, things are looking good. Just make sure you continue taking little shortcuts here and there and keep up your speed – the aim isn’t just to come first, you have to beat the clock too.

Challenge #1: Player’s Choice – Mumbo: Big Rimmed Race Off
Strategy: This time around, build a fast yet controllable car. High grip wheels and spoilers with wheels spaced out nicely to accompany some high-powered jets and engines. At the start, zoom out in front of your opponents, then when it comes time to go up the ramp onto the high platform in the middle of the area, take your foot off the pedal to avoid going flying through the air. When you get to the docks area, slow down a bit around the bends to ensure you don’t go past each of the checkpoint gates, then put your foot down again on the way back to the starting area. Avoid spinning out over the course of the three laps and you should take home the trophy with ease.

Challenge #2: LOG’s Choice – Pikelet: Several Sized Sumo
Strategy: This is by far the easiest challenge of the lot, and you shouldn’t have to worry about getting the trophy at all. Don’t worry about ramming Pikelet – instead, reverse so that your vehicle is right on the edge of the arena, then sit on top of it if you like. Wait for Pikelet to come hurdling at you, then hop off your vehicle with the right timing to watch him go flying out of the ring. If you mess up, feel free to restart. Remember that getting the Trophy in this case requires you to be fast, so dawdling in the ring and taking more rounds than you need to should be avoided.

Challenge #2: Player’s Choice – Pikelet: Several Sized Sumo
Strategy: Again, very easy, so you can use the strategy from the LOG’s Choice challenge if you like. Alternatively, you can make a vehicle with a Sticky Ball and attach it to Pikelet’s vehicle to paralyse him, then hop out and use your wrench to throw him out of the ring. Beware as you do so, though, because Pikelet’s vehicle is equipped with some nasty bumpers which could end up knocking you out first if you aren’t careful.

Challenge #3: LOG’s Choice – Jolly Dodger: Car Park Cavalcade
Strategy: You’ll need 130 points or more for the Trophy in this challenge. Picking up the Jiggy is easy enough, but if you want all prizes you’ll need to learn the course and keep with the crown. Be really careful going around the loop so that you don’t fall off, and watch out for the bolts in the ground and the stacks of bins near the end. If you fall off a platform or are caught by part of the terrain, just restart and don’t waste your time trying to fix your mistakes unless they were extremely minor.

Challenge #3: Player’s Choice – Jolly Dodger: Car Park Cavalcade
Strategy: If you want the Trophy for this challenge, you’ll need to rack up 180 points. My suggestion is to take the regular Showdown Town trolley then customise it to suit the challenge. Take out the junk underneath the tray and add two large engines and two super engines. Add four super fuels to the front of the vehicle. Change Banjo’s seat into a super seat, then add a foldy propeller on top of it.

Most of the challenge itself is about knowing the route and knowing where you have to be at what time in order to score points. After dashing into the crown at the start of the challenge, avoid the Gruntbots and scale the ramp, keeping an eye on the HUD incase your vehicle goes out of the crown. Take your time going around the loop, then get ready to dart across with the crown to the other side of the area.

Once in the icy area, activate the propeller to keep yourself in the air above the crown so that the Gruntbots can’t stop you. When you get just in front of the tunnel, turn off the propeller and keep with the crown, entering the tunnel if you need to get away from the Gruntbots as the purple ones cannot enter it.

Once you exit the tunnel again, activate the propeller once more. You’ll have to keep it activated for the rest of the challenge. Follow the crown above the water slowly, then line yourself up to go through the loop and over the platform with the crown. Over the other side, keep relatively low and inside the crown, only lifting up when you need to go over the collections of bins. This is arguably the hardest part to rack up points, so keep with the crown closely and make sure you have at least 145 points when you get above the second lot of bins. From here to the finish you’ll just have to watch yourself and keep as close to the crown as possible to win the Trophy. Land on the final helipad when you get up there to avoid losing your final, valuable points.

Challenge #4: LOG’s Choice – Bottles: Glossy Gaffes
Strategy: This challenge can really suck if the Gruntbots and terrain get in your way, so sometimes it can just be a matter of restarting again until things go right. That said, there are still a few things you can do to make your life easier. First off, when the challenge begins, edit the truck so that you simply have engines and fuel under a box with wheels, along with your seat at the front. Grab the petrol can and hop in.

You’ll want to head over to Wumba in the ice area first. If you can, make use of the wall to slide around to her platform, then hop out and use your wrench to give her the petrol if it didn’t register. Drive off the wharf and around, up the concrete slope and flying over the bolts to get back to Bottles. Grab the second can and drive over to Jolly, again riding up the wall and around onto his platform to get to him more easily. Head back to Bottles then grab your last tank and hurdle across the water to Klungo’s wharf. When you get there, hop out and grab the can, then swim up and mess around with the wrench so that the can is hovering in front of his face. Hopefully you’ll have some luck here.

Challenge #4: Player’s Choice – Bottles: Glossy Gaffes
Strategy: Make a similar vehicle to the one described for Jolly’s Player Choice Challenge, but reposition the fuel at the back of the vehicle and add a sticky ball to the front. This time around there’s an extra person to deliver to in the previously-vacant corner of the Test O’ Track, behind a crowd of floating Grunt Bots. Head over there first with your can, darting in between then dropping down with your delivery. Head back to Bottles and take another can to Jolly on the rocks, then Klungo over the other side of the water, then to Wumba in the ice area. The main thing you’ll have to watch here is that your pick up of subsequent oil cans is quick – delivery should be fairly speedy with your new flying vehicle and sticky ball.

Challenge #5: LOG’s Choice – Humba Wumba: Ben Hurdle
Strategy: Know your course. The idea here is to go around the course using the spring on your oddly-crafted vehicle to jump over each of the hurdles and get through each of the checkpoints. You’ll want to avoid hitting all hurdles as they add a second to your clock, as well as each of the cardboard cutouts scattered around the track which will add up to 3 seconds.

Make the first part of the course quick and watch the positioning of your wheels as you come down from a jump so that you can continue without spinning out or toppling over. When you head up the ramp onto the centre platform, take utmost care as you go around the loop so you don’t fall off, or you’ll need to start over. When you get to the open area after coming down from the centre platform, make some good turns then line yourself up for the several hurdles in a row, before turning and going back the other way. Just ensure that your wheels are firmly planted on the ground before you turn. The rest of the course is relatively straight forward, just keep your foot on the pedal but watch yourself after jumping to avoid spinning out and you should be good.

Challenge #5: Player’s Choice – Humba Wumba: Ben Hurdle
Strategy: Create a fast plane with a couple of propellers at the front and jets for speed. The course itself is going to be a bit tough as far as plane handling goes, so remember to brake with the left trigger coming into a turn, but alternate between the brakes and accelerator as you turn to make sure your plane doesn’t drop to the floor. You’ll also need to be careful with the acceleration to make sure you don’t hurdle right over the tops of the gates or past them – if you miss a gate, there’s no going back for it if you want that trophy, you’ll just have to start again instead.

Challenge #6: LOG’s Choice – Mr Fit: Hoop Scoop
Strategy: For this one, you’ll need to fly over to the pick-up platform first, jump out and grab your basketball before going around the course. You’ll want to rack up as much points as possible as fast as possible, so go for all the 3-point rings and, if need be, remember the course of 3-pointers so that you know exactly where to go next at each turn.

The LOG’s Choice vehicle also governs your movement in this challenge, so watch yourself when carrying it around. Hold the right trigger and the control stick up if you wish to move forward, but when lowering the vehicle try not to move the control stick when holding the left trigger or you may risk tipping out your luggage. Likewise, when going up fast with the right trigger, slow down gradually at the end of your ascent to keep the ball from flying out of the box.

Challenge #6: Player’s Choice – Mr Fit: Hoop Scoop
Strategy: There are a few methods for this challenge, but the main idea is to design a vehicle which keeps the ball safely in your grip without having to worry about it flying out when performing tighter manoeuvrers. The way I did this was by creating a large basket – using a large box as a base, a large box to stop the ball falling out from behind and a large tray on top. I added some poles on the sides to keep it in, with three wings on either side and lots of fuel and a couple of jets underneath. Last but not least, two Suck ‘n’ Blows were kept at the back of the ‘basket’ to keep the ball in place so that it had no chance of escape.

For the challenge itself, all was required was flying over to the ball’s platform and sucking it up, then keeping it in the plane’s hold while going around the course. I stuck to all of the 3-point rings except one, the one inside the loop-de-loop incase I got stuck, instead opting for an easy 2-pointer nearby.
